The leadership of CGON is composed of accomplished experts in global oncology, committed to advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes. Through innovative strategies and international collaboration, they lead efforts to develop impactful healthcare solutions. Their dedication ensures that CGON remains at the forefront of global cancer care, making a meaningful difference for patients around the world.

  • Chair

    Dr. Jean-Marc Bourque studied medicine at l’Université de Montréal and radiation oncology at Western University, while also completing a 2-year Global Health Certificate at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. He went on to do a 2-year academic fellowship at Kings College London (KCL) while concurrently completing an MSc. in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in the UK. The aim of his research is to better understand disparities in vulnerable and marginalized populations, locally and abroad.

    Dr. Bourque has taken many leadership roles including co-founding the world’s first international body of Junior Doctors under the auspices of the World Medical Association. He served as the co-chair of the CARO Global Oncology Committee, was a member of the steering committee of the International Cancer Control Partnership and continues to be a consultant at the International Atomic Energy Agency, United Nations.

    Dr. Bourque is currently assistant professor of radiation oncology at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Universite de Montreal (CHUM) specializing in breast and skin malignancies. He is clinician scientist at the CHUM Research Centre advancing equity in breast cancer treatment through clinical trials targeting hard-to-reach populations, including underserved LMIC groups and sexual gender minorities patients, while emphasizing biobanking and sociodemographic analyses.

  • Co-Chair

    Dr. Maroie Barkati is a radiation oncologist at the CHUM since 2010. She is an associate professor in medicine at the University of Montreal. She obtained her MD in Radiation Oncology from University of Montreal and has completed a fellowship in Brachytherapy at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

    She is very involved in academics, from pre-clinical students in Medicine to residents in Radiation Oncology and international fellows. Her fields of interests are prostate cancer and GYN oncology. She is in charge of GYN in her department and participated in the training of gynecologist oncologists internationally.

    She also participated in the implementation of Real-time prostate HDR brachytherapy program in her institution since 2011. In 2016, she developed an educational workshop on HDR ultrasound planning for prostate cancer, with a focus on the clinical, technical and physics aspects of brachytherapy.

    She actively participates in clinical research in oncology and is a member of many national and international research groups. She is involved in many societies, is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (radiation oncology exams and brachytherapy diploma), she is a member of the executive committee of the Association des radio-oncologues du Québec, a member of the CARO and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society.

    Since 2015, she participates as an expert in African missions held by the International Atomic Energy Agency and trains radiation oncologists in brachytherapy, and regularly hosts scientific visits for radiation oncologists and physicists from low and middle income countries.
